Fired in large kilns in San Francisco, Debrorah Stein products use primarily high-fire clay bodies ranging from pitch black stonewares to translucent white porcelain. Gorgeous glazes result from the unique reduction process. Some porcelain plates use a laborious and beautiful technique called "scraffito" whereby the greenware is waxed and then designs hand-etched into the clay before underglazes are added. Small batch series consist of one-of-a-kind works of art made by hand in multi-step processes that can take up to two months to complete. She draws diachronically on both the history of art and contemporary art to produce original art works characterized by both wit and beauty.
